SUMMARY:Honor and Remember Memorial Ride
DESCRIPTION:On 6 August 2011\, a U.S. CH-47D Chinook military helicopter operating with the call sign Extortion 17 was shot down while transporting a Quick Reaction Force attempting to reinforce a Joint Special Operations Command unit of the 75th Ranger Regiment in the Tangi Valley in Maidan Wardak province\, southwest of Kabul\, Afghanistan. As a result\, 38 personnel and one military dog lives were lost. Of the 38\, 30 +1 were US forces consisting of US NAVY SEALs and Support Personnel\, US Army and Army Reserve\, USAF Personnel and MWD Bart. It was the greatest single-incident loss of American lives in Operation Enduring Freedom. \nThis year marks the 15th Anniversary since our loss. The Extortion 17 Memorial Ride has been held each year in honor of our Heroes and as a way to share their stories keeping their memories alive. Our focus is on who they were and how they lived. \nThe Virginia Beach Police\, along with officers form our neighboring Cities will lead the procession of the 15th Annual Memorial Ride on a 31-mile loop around the city. The VBFD and EMS services will also participate by setting up strategically along the route to ensure a safe ride for all. \nThere are no costs or fees to participate in the ride. The sole purpose of this ride is to honor and remember these 31 Heroes and keep their memories alive in the hearts and minds of our community. \nThe EXTORTION 17 Memorial Ride is the only ride fully supported by the City of Virginia Beach Special Events with an escort provided by the Virginia Beach Police Department and support from the Virginia Beach Fire Department and EMS Services. \nPrior to the ride\, there will be an Opening Ceremony with a Marine Corps League Color Guard\, singing of the National Anthem\, a prayer/invocation and TAPs. \nThe Frogmen MC along with other participants will read aloud the names and a short personal story of the 30 Soldiers\, Sailors\, Airmen and 1 Military Working Dog who made the ultimate sacrifice defending our freedoms. Memorial remembrance cards and ride wristbands will be provided to participants as long as supplies last. \nThe Patriot Guard stood for many\, if not all of the Heroes of EXTORTION 17\, and we still stand in support of their Gold Star Families.
